The next morning Victoria woke alone in the big bed, and pulled on Robin’s shirt before she went downstairs to look for him. She found him in the study, where he was carefully replacing the diaries in the fireplace recess. The lights were also on, indicating the power to mansion had been restored.

“I thought I’d let you sleep in,” he said as he closed the secret door in the bricks. “I almost did keep you up all night.”

“I think that’s my line.” She sat down in the armchair by the fireplace and watched him add some logs to the banked fire. “You’re not going to tell anyone about the diaries, are you? Or the hidden room.”

“I haven’t decided. Bell has no living relatives aside from his cousin in England, who I know is a prig. Corinth actually owns the contents of the mansion along with the rest of the estate.” He walked over to the window and opened the curtains to look out. “The storm’s passed, and the electric’s working. I expect they’ll have the road repaired by this afternoon, so we can drive back to the city. I want you to stay with me at my hotel tonight, love.”

The last time he’d asked her that she’d refused, Victoria recalled, but she’d been confused and frightened. Now she knew that being with Robin was exactly what she needed, but there was also the future, which loomed like a giant question mark. Would he want her to be his submissive only for as long as he was in the states, or was he planning something more permanent? She wasn’t sure she wanted to know the answer to that.

When this job was over, Robin might go back to London and forget about her. Maybe the only reason he even wanted her was because James Bell’s sexy secrets had aroused him. She might not know the truth until it was time for Robin to return to the UK. Chances were he would end up breaking her heart.

I don’t care, Victoria thought. It’s worth the risk.

“Victoria?”

She looked up at him and smiled. “Of course I’ll stay with you. I’d like to stop by my apartment, and pick up some clothes and things, if that’s all right.”

Robin turned around to face her. “You really have no more doubts?”

“None to speak of.” Victoria stood up and walked over to slip her arms around his waist. “What I mean is, I trust you, sir.” She hesitated before she added, “I do think it would be better if no one knows about us, though. Mr. Corinth believes the firm’s reputation has to be spotless.”

“I don’t give a bloody damn about Joseph,” Robin told her.

“I know.” She rested her cheek against his chest. “But I don’t want to cause any trouble for either of us if I don’t have to.”

“Our era is slightly more progressive than James Bell’s was, you know.” He tipped up her chin and kissed her forehead and the tip of her nose and her bottom lip.
